Although inanimate themselves, scarecrows are fashioned by animate hands; by people who take a modest set of things and turn them into abstract human figures that sometimes appear ghostlike and mysterious, and sometimes like a person in a landscape. Scarecrows may represent lonely or perhaps “metamorphosed” people who gaze upon their dreams, wishes, and fate for hours and days in silence before vanishing all at once.
